CHEER TRYOUTS for the 2012-2013 SEASON

Tryouts will be on Saturday, May 12th. At 1 p.m. we will hold an optional clinic perfecting motions, going over the cheers and sidelines, and warming up jumps.

Everyone who wishes to be on the squad must try out, even if she has been on the squad before.  It is new each year.

Videos of the cheers are posted below.  Prospective cheerleaders will learn the cheers on their own, through the videos.  Each squad (middle and high school) has its own halftime cheer tryout video.  Both squads will learn the same sideline.

Then, the girls will try out, in groups of four, in front of a panel of judges.  We will start with upcoming seniors first and work our way down to upcoming 7th graders last.  As girls get ready for their group tryout, they will call their parents to let them know they need to be picked up soon. Each candidate will step forward and do a toe touch and one optional jump individually. Once all four have finished their two jumps, they will do the tryout cheer followed by the tryout sideline. If a candidate wishes to do standing tumbling she may do so after the tryout sideline, but tumbling is not required. It will simply be additional points to the candidates final score.

The judges will be hired professionals who will have objectivity. Judges will base their opinions on performance only.  The coach in charge will assign points based on the tryout packets and teacher recommendations.

Much like a job interview, a tryout packet/resume can look superb, but it all comes down to the interview/tryout.  We are looking at the whole picture... motions, knowledge, spirit, facial expressions, volume, jumps, tumbling, answers to tryout questions, grades, and teacher recommendations.  If you are lacking in one area, make up for it in another.

As always, if you are involved in other sports or activities that will prevent you from being in even one game, or if you have vacations that will interfere, please do not tryout, taking the spot of someone else who can be there for each activity.  If there is a game, you are expected to be there too.  Leaving games early is also not an option.  Please be prepared to cheer both the football and basketball seasons.  However, during basketball season, we will split each squad into two groups and cheer only home games and local away games, as well as playoff games, wherever they may be.

Tryout results will be posted on the website on  Tuesday evening after tryouts.  We will post by tryout numbers.  No names will be listed (to avoid public embarassment).  While initial results are ready on Saturday evening, we need the time to verify all numbers/results and run them by the athletic director for final approval.

GETTING READY TO TRYOUT?
Here is a link to a great instructional video on motions.  To be honest motions are what can make or break someone trying to get onto the squad.  Even if someone has tumbling, she cannot make the squad without good motions.  For a great tutorial (about 15-20 minutes), click the link below:
